Pretty in Pig offers a direct and unapologetic portrait of a warthog - wrinkled, wild, and wonderfully charismatic. This close-up composition lets the viewer engage eye-to-eye with a creature often dismissed as comical or ungainly.

INSPIRATION FOR THIS ARTWORK

This piece was painted for the Beauty or Beast exhibition - and warthogs, to me, are both. I’ve always loved their gruff charm and peculiar elegance. Here, I leaned into texture using highly granulating watercolours... allowing the pigments to echo the roughness of hide and the untamed spirit behind those eyes.

By keeping the palette monotone, I wanted the viewer to focus purely on expression, form, and presence... a warthog, stripped of embellishment, standing proud in its own skin with it's own special beauty.
